Am I Suffering from Kidney Disease?

in conjunction with March being Kidney Awareness Month, we will be discovering the common signs of kidney disease. Did you know that 1 in 10 Malaysian adults are diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)? In view of this figure, let us look into the basic functions of the kidneys and what are the warning signs of kidney disease. 

The kidneys are two organs located towards the end of the abdominal cavity on both sides of the spine. Its main responsibilities are purifying the blood of toxins, removing wastes through urine, regulating pH levels, maintaining fluid balance, and producing hormones which form red blood cells. However, once it ceases to function, death may occur. 

Although there's no known cure for CKD, treatment is possible if detected early. Be on the lookout for the following symptoms:

- Constant lethargy or lack of concentration
- Sleeplessness
- Dry, itchy skin
- Frequent urination, especially at night
- Bloody or foamy urine 
- Puffiness of the eyes
- Swollen ankles and feet
- Appetite loss
- Muscle cramps
