Ischaemic heart disease is the top cause of deaths among Malaysians, with at least 50 people dying a day. Simply put, ischaemic heart disease is when the arteries, clogged with plaque, are unable to transport enough oxygen-rich blood to the heart, essentially "choking" it until the muscles begin to die, leading to heart attacks. As of 2018, this disease has claimed the lives of close to 18,200 Malaysians, with men making up the majority.

In light of these frightening numbers, what can be done to ensure that someone we know or ourselves from falling victim to it? First, we need to be aware of the warning signs of ischaemic heart disease:

  • Extreme fatigue
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Dizziness/lightheaded
  • Chest pains
  • Heart palpitations
  • Swelling in your hands and feet
  • Sleeplessness
  • Weight gain

Aside from looking out for these symptoms, another way to find out is to answer a few questions about your family and health background such as:

1. Do I have a family history of heart attacks?

2. Do I exercise regularly?

3. Am I a heavy smoker/drinker?

4. Do I often consume fatty, sugary, and salty foods?

5. Do I have a healthy body weight?

If your answers to these questions show that your lifestyle is unhealthy, then it's recommended that you take action NOW. Most heart attacks can be prevented at its early stages by making an effort to bring significant dietary and lifestyle changes. Here are some of them:

  • Cut down on foods high in cholesterol, sugar, and salt
  • Reduce alcohol consumption
  • Don't smoke
  • Exercise regularly
  • Monitor your blood pressure every now and then
