Golden or amber yellow in colour, sunflower oil is a type of oil that's obtained from the seeds of the flower. It's used in a variety of ways, from cooking to making cosmetic formulations by acting as an emollient. But sunflower oil is best known for its amazing health benefits due to its composition.

Sunflower oil contains two types of acids - linoleic and oleic acid. Linoleic acid is a polysaturated omega-6 fatty acid that remains at liquid form at room temperature, making it very healthy and beneficial in promoting heart health. Oleic acid, on the other hand, is a monosaturated fat that's commonly extracted from vegetables and used as a healthier alternative to animal fats which are loaded with saturated fats, the main culprit behind obesity and heart diseases.

Now that we know what's the chemical composition of sunflower oil, let's take a look at its proven health benefits:

1. Promotes heart health. Sunflower oil is a source rich in monosaturated fats, as high as 80%. Monosaturated fats help keep your heart in good shape by lowering cholesterol and blood pressure levels. It's also a recommended form of fats to replace saturated fats or carbs which may cause the heart's arteries to become clogged.

2. It's good for your skin. Aside from monosaturated fats, sunflower oil has one of the highest amounts of Vitamin E and A in it. These antioxidants-packed vitamins protect the skin from acne as well as regenerate new skin cells. It's also used as a moisturiser, making it useful for dry, sensitive skin.

3. Acts as an energy booster. Ever wondered why you'd feel sleepy after a meal of burger and fries? That's because foods loaded with saturated fats tend to make the body feel lethargic, whereas monosaturated fats causes the liver to release glycogen into the bloodstream, a type of sugar that gives us the extra boost of energy!

4. Builds strong, beautiful hair. Do you sometimes wish that your hair could be like those you see in a Sunsilk ad? Sunflower oil may be the answer! The reason is due to its high content of alpha linoleic acid (GLA) which prevents hair loss and gives your hair that extra shine. All you need to do is to massage it to your scalp once a week.

5. Boosts your immunity. As mentioned previously, sunflower oil is full of antioxidants like Vitamin A and E which is important for a strong immune system. It also fortifies cell membranes as a way to decrease the chances of harmful bacteria and viruses entering into the body. Sunflower oil also contains protein that are vital in rebuilding damaged tissues.

6. Improves digestion. If you're one who experiences digestive problems often, one of the causes may be the type of cooking oil you use for cooking. Thanks to its high monosaturated fats content, sunflower oil is easily digested and acts as a mild laxative to relieve constipation.
