In the previous article, we discussed about the common eye problems that people face. Today, we'll be looking into certain foods and supplements that have proven to be beneficial for the eyes.

The eyes are only able to function when it is being taken care of and protected by several antioxidants such as lutein, zeaxanthin,  vitamins (A,C,E), beta-carotene, Omega-3 fatty acids, and zinc. All of these play a vital role in ensuring that your eyes stay healthy always. Where can we get them from? Here are a few:

1. Fish. It has been long documented that fatty fish, notably salmon, are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids needed to build and develop the retina as well as prevent dry eyes. While it's best eaten fresh and whole, you can also opt to consume Omega-3 fatty acids in capsule form.

2. Eggs. They are an extremely versatile ingredient as it can be used for any kind of cuisine and cooked in different ways. Another reason to love eggs is that the yolk is packed with vitamin A, lutein, zeaxanthin, and zinc - all of which are essential for healthy eyes where it helps prevent cataracts, macular degeneration, and night blindness.

3. Carrots. This vegetable may be Bugs Bunny's favorite but not yours, however it is full of beta-carotene and vitamin A. These two help protect the eye's surface and prevent serious eye conditions.

4.Oranges. Vitamin C has been found to be vital in promoting eye health as it helps build blood vessels in the eyes. It also acts as a defender against macular degeneration and cataracts when combined with other vitamins and nutrients.

5. Bilberry. If you're one who struggles to see clearly at night, then bilberry can help in alleviating that, although there is limited research to provide strong backing. Bilberry has shown more concrete promise in preventing glaucoma, where a two year study found that it improved vision by 30%.

Aside from taking these natural foods and supplements, there are also lifestyle habits that can aid in ensuring your eyes stay healthy all the time:

- Reduce screen time, especially at night
- Don't smoke
- Rest sufficiently
- Learn to manage your blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol levels
- Exercise
