Although the
word ‘happy’ exists in this medical term, those with this condition have little
to be happy about. This is because they may be suffering from low oxygen levels
in their blood without them realizing it.
Happy
hypoxia (also known as Silent Hypoxia) is a condition in which individuals
appear fine or ‘happy’ on the outside and do not realize that their oxygen
levels are dipping at a critical level. This phenomenon has also puzzled
scientists, who are still studying why this occurs.
So, how can
you know whether you are showing signs of “happy hypoxia”? Doctors say that
these are the symptoms to look out for:
- ·
Breathlessness
- ·
Chest
pains
- ·
Confusion/delirium
- ·
Lips
turning bluish or pale
- ·
Cold
palms
- ·
Headaches
Given the mysterious and dangerous nature of “happy hypoxia”, it is important to always have a pulse oximeter beside you to constantly monitor your oxygen levels. If your oxygen levels are 95% and above, you’re relatively low risk. However, if it drops below 94%, you’re strongly recommended to consult a doctor immediately to avoid further complications or even death.
All in all, always
be sure to follow the SOPs (social distancing, washing hands frequently, mask
wearing) and avoid crowded places so that you can protect yourself and those around
you. Also, get your hands on an oximeter whenever you can to monitor your oxygen levels. #KitaJagaKita
