Before you ask yourself the following question, you have to first understand the characteristics of cholesterol and how it endangers the body, especially blood arteries.
Cholesterol is a waxy substance produced by the liver and it's important in the formation of Vitamin D, cell membranes, and several hormones. However, one key thing to note about it is that it can't dissolve in water and must be transported through the bloodstream with the help of lipoproteins.
Lipoproteins is then divided further into low-density lipoproteins (LDL) and high-density lipoproteins (HDL). The main difference between the two is that LDL poses a risk to the body by clogging up the arteries, whereas HDL transports LDL cholesterol back to the liver to be rid of.
Given the nature of cholesterol, you won't know that you're suffering from high cholesterol until it's probably too late. For now, the only way you can be aware of cholesterol levels is through a blood test, which can reveal whether your cholesterol levels exceed 240 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL).
Despite this being the only way of detecting high cholesterol levels, here are some signs to look out for which may be a red flag of your arteries getting clogged with plaque:
- Chest pains
- Extreme fatigue
- Nausea
- Breathlessness
- Partial/full numbness
- Blurred vision
If you experience any of the above, quickly seek medical attention as it could be a sign of a heart attack or stroke caused by high cholesterol. Even if you're young person but are obese or, a heavy smoker, or have a family history of such diseases, do remain alert for the signs and always make sure that you lead a healthy and active lifestyle.
