We all want to have a dazzling smile, but it can't be done until certain habits are cultivated. With your teeth being the main 'star', here are some important measures to take to keep it sparkling and clean.

1. Brush thoroughly.  You can buy the most expensive and innovative toothbrush there is out there, but if your brushing method is wrong, it's all for nothing. In fact, failing to brush properly may be more harmful than not brushing at all. When you brush your teeth, don't rush through it and be sure to move the toothbrush in gentle, circular movements in order to remove plaque.

2. Don't forget the tongue! Most people assume that plaque only builds up on teeth, but the reality is that it can accumulate at the tongue too. Keeping the tongue out of the brushing routine can lead to bad mouth odor and oral problems later in life. Want to avoid that? Just gently brush the tongue everyday and that's it!

3. Use fluoride toothpaste. While there is evidence to suggest that fluoride may negatively impact one's health, it's still recognized as an effective element against tooth decay. As such, be sure to be on the lookout for toothpaste that contains fluoride.

4. Floss regularly. Flossing may prove to be a challenge for children and older adults to do, but it's equally as important as brushing. Make sure that you floss at least once a day as this will protect your gums, remove plaque, and reduce inflammation in the surrounding areas.

5. Use mouthwash. You may not know it but mouthwash can prove to be an effective way in cleaning areas of your mouth where it's hard for a toothbrush to reach. It also helps to reduce acid and re-mineralizes the teeth. Mouthwash may be considered for children and older people when flossing is not ideal.

6. Drink water. It has been said time and time again about water's ability in improving overall health - and the same applies to oral health too. Experts recommend drinking water right after a meal as it will help wash away acids and sticky foods stuck to the teeth's surface.
